Winter is for the Birds! By: Amy Vedder |
| |
The winter months are hard on everybody. Let’s face it, the winter seems to make everything harder. The cold air causes you to have to bundle up, the falling snow means that you have to get up extra early to shovel out the driveway, and the slush roads means leaving for work extra early just to get there at the regular time.
Yes the winter months are hard, but as hard as they are for us, they can be even harder for the birds that don’t migrate south during the cold winter months. Not only are they challenged to stay warm in the snowy condition, it’s also a much more difficult time for them to find food.
So why not help out our flying friends while adding a little beauty to your yard in winter? How you may ask? Easy, just add a birdfeeder to your yard this winter to give the birds that stay behind one extra place they can go to get something to eat.
Birdfeeders come in all shapes and sizes, and choosing a feeder may depend on what type of bird you’re looking to attract and what type of other creatures you’re looking to avoid. Ultimately, any type of birdfeeder will do the job; birds don’t have preferences or specific taste when it comes to birdfeeders. They do have taste when it comes to what is in the birdfeeder.
Different birds will be attracted by different foods, so you may want to take some time and research as to which birds stay in your area during the winter and what types of food they like.
If doing research and getting a feeder sounds like more work than you want to do, there is a simple solution. Forget the feeder and seed and go straight for throwing your extra bread scraps right on to the back lawn.
No it’s not fancy and it’s not attractive but it is effective. It will only take the birds in your neighborhood a short time to figure out that you’re throwing bread scraps onto your lawn.
Feeding the birds in winter is not only a nice thing to do for the birds but also for yourself. The birds act as a reminder of the spring that follows every winter. The birds that visit your lawn in winter will bring with them the reassurance that no matter how hard the winter gets, it is only temporary and that before you know it, it will be spring again.
