What majors are featured at Marygrove College?

We are a liberal arts college, so the possibilities are endless. Well known as a teachers college, Marygrove teachers and administrators can be found in school systems all over the country. We also have plenty of other programs to offer students! We feature our unique and extremely popular Forensic Science major, one of only two such programs approved by the Michigan Department of Education. We also offer Art Therapy, another rare, but exciting major. In the fall, we will begin offering a Criminal Justice major. Our other majors include Business, Computer Science, Music, Dance and English, to name a few.

Marygrove is proud of its Graduate programs, too. We are the first college in the country to offer a Social Justice degree. Master’s degrees in Social Work, Human Resource Management and Education are also popular. Our Education Master’s degrees are available online, through distance learning and in the classroom.

What is the mission of Marygrove College?

We are committed to fostering Christian values, educating students from diverse backgrounds and serving the people of Metropolitan Detroit and beyond. Marygrove provides a personalized learning environment through excellent teaching in its undergraduate, graduate and non-credit programs. The fundamental purpose of Marygrove College is to educate each student toward intellectual and professional competence; toward career flexibility through grounding in the liberal arts; and toward active compassion and commitment.

What is "Kid's College?"

Kids’ College is a unique opportunity for very young children to mid-teens to come to Marygrove to take academic and enrichment courses. Kids’ College has been around for over thirty years and is a unique experience for all those involved.

We offer courses for children in reading comprehension, basic math skills, kids’ art, music, dance, sports, enrichment, modeling and etiquette, chess, and so much more! We even have a learning clinic for individualized learning to help keep children right on track with their studies.

It’s a great program for parents taking classes: while you’re in college, your kids are too!

Kids’ College also offers summer camps, which include sports and enrichment programs like Money Matters, Music, Dance, Soccer and Ribbon and Baton Twirling. More information about the Kids’ College can be accessed on our website, www.marygrove.edu.

What is the campus like?

Set in the heart of Detroit, fifty-two gorgeous green acres encompass the campus, and students at Marygrove experience idyllic beauty while learning in the city. Marygrove consists of five buildings. Though we are mainly a commuter college, Marygrove offers dormitory rooms to students from all over the world, and to those who’d rather study and live right on campus. Our dormitory, Florent Gillett, can house seventy-five to eighty students at a time.

Your motto is “Unique, Personal, Urban, Cosmopolitan.” What does that mean?

That is how we would like to be viewed. We’re Urban. Located in the city of Detroit, our students are able to learn in an “urban laboratory” and become an active part of the community. We are Unique because we are the only Catholic liberal arts college in the area with a variety of class choices. Personal attention is given to all students. The student to teacher ratio is 15:1 or better, allowing students to get one-on-one attention from their professors, not student aids or teaching assistants. We’re Cosmopolitan with our multi-cultural student body. We welcome people of all different races and cultural backgrounds, opening a whole world of possibilities. In other words, Marygrove College is a lot like YOU!
Aside from its rare majors and its cool urban setting, what makes Marygrove unique?

We welcome students, young and old. At Marygrove College, it’s never too early or too late to complete an education.

We are the only college to have the Institute of Music and Dance and the Institute for Detroit Studies. We also have the Institute for Art-Infused Education, where teachers and artists work together to teach the core curriculum through art; different aspects of art are used in the classroom. It is a concept that is taking root in elementary schools and Marygrove is exploring its expansive possibilities.

Marygrove has a couple programs whereby people with Bachelor’s Degrees in teachable majors like science, English and math can take weekend classes and earn their Master’s Degree and Teaching Certificate within twenty-four months.

Also, unlike other colleges, we won’t wait-list you. We’re actually waiting for you!
