Make Your Backyard a Wildlife Habitat |
| |
When you stop to really look around your backyard, you’ll discover that there are a lot of little creature that call your property their home. Some of these little creatures, such as ants and other insects, may not be the kind of guests you were looking for, but there are other small creatures such as birds and rabbits that are wonderful guests and that really make your backyard and exciting place to visit.
If you’re looking to turn your backyard into a wildlife habitat or if you’re interested in attracting more of the preferred backyard guests, consider the following suggestions to make your backyard the ideal habitat for some of your favorite neighborhood animals:
Provide Food. One of the best ways to attract a certain type of animal is to provide the food they like to eat, for example, butterflies love flowers like zinnias and purple cone flower, and hummingbirds love wild columbine. The idea is to provide what they like to eat, and they will come.
Provide water. Next to food, providing water is very important to attracting wildlife to your backyard. A raised birdbath is perfect for all your winged residents while a small bowl on the ground will work great for little furry friends.
Shelter. Unfortunately, you can’t charge your backyard residents rent, but you can provide safe, comfortable places for them to live. Evergreens are always a good choice because they provide year round protection. Also, you can construct nest boxes for birds to take up residence. For ground dwellers, consider plants with large leafy overhangs. Animals like rabbits like to raise their young under the boughs of plants. Rocks and log piles also make great habitats for wildlife.
You will of course want to take into consideration how much space you have to work with in your backyard before you start dropping down old logs or piling up rocks, but with a little planning you can create a wonderful backyard habitat that will continue to attract wildlife for years to come. Just decide what you want to attract, and provide the things that those animals love.
