June Vegetable Garden Checklist By: Peter Doyle |
| |
Summer is finally here and so is another vegetable growing season. If you’re like me, you’ve been getting ready for months to be ready for Memorial Day, which has become the unofficial kickoff to the planting season. But in case you have any doubt about what you need to be doing in the garden right now, take a look at the following June Vegetable Garden Checklist to make sure you’re on schedule for an abundant fall harvest.
• Plant warm weather vegetables now. Yes it’s finally time to get some of the garden favorites into the ground. Now is the time to plant corn, beans, tomatoes, eggplants, squash and all other warm weather loving vegetables. *Just hold off a little longer on the melons.
• If you start your plants from seed, begin thinning vegetable seedlings to make sure you provide enough room for mature plants. Check to make sure you’re providing enough space, but most products require six to twelve inches between plants to have enough space to grow properly.
• Thin out runners sprouting from your strawberry plants. Choose to keep one or two runners from the strongest most productive plants, pull all the rest. Also weed out entire strawberry bed.
• Thin out small green fruits from apple and plum trees to one fruit per every six inches. Also prune off any dead branches or leafs.
• Set up trellises to support peas, cucumber and bean plants.
• Continue planting lettuce seedlings for a few more weeks. You can start planting lettuce seedlings again in late summer and early fall.
• Activate and stir compost pile. You may want to add some garden soil and products to help speed up the break down of material.
June is a busy time for the vegetable gardener, and this quick June Vegetable Garden Checklist really only touches on the essential work that needs to be done in June. If you have already been busy in the garden, you may have already accomplished all this, if not, you had better get busy. There’s a lot more to do in the months to come.
