Tips for Enjoying a Green Picnic Lunch

With the warm summer weather finally here we’re all going to be getting outside more which mean more day trips and more outdoor lunch picnics. Outdoor lunch picnics are great way to enjoy a meal because you’re outdoors in a beautiful location probably enjoying time with friends and family.

But for all the upsides to a nice picnic lunch, there is also a very serious down side. Picnics tend not to be very environmentally friendly. If you are looking to make your next picnic more environmentally friendly, consider the following suggestions:

• Consider the packaging. The biggest problem with a picnic lunch is that it requires a lot of packaging to keep things fresh and ready to eat at lunch. The packaging needed for a lunch picnic, runs the gamut from the bag you carry your food in to the packaging you wrap your sandwich in. Basically the average picnic requires a lot of plastic wrap.

• Rather than a bag to carry your food, consider using a traditional wicker picnic basket. Also wrap sandwiches together rather than separately, or use reusable plastic containers instead of plastic wrap. In addition, use real silverware instead of disposable wear, unless the utensils are biodegradable.

• Carry out what you carry in. It is possible that you will choose to picnic in an area without any trash facilities. That is why it is important to bring along a bag for the trash you create. If there are no trash cans available, just wrap up your trash and take it home and throw it out there. Never leave behind a bag of trash.

• Also, consider the environment for what it is. When spending time in nature it can be very tempting to change or alter things to you’re liking, but it is important to disturb as little as possible when picnicking in the outdoors, something as simple as picking flowers can have an environmental impact so it is important to look and admire but not to alter. This is particularly true when you have children with you. Don’t miss the opportunity to teach the kids right.

An outdoor picnic lunch is a great way to spend the afternoon, and with a little effort you can make your next picnic a green picnic, and an environmentally friendly day.
