Making a Backyard Beach By: Ryan Mathews |
| |
Everybody loves the beach. Maybe it’s the cool breeze that blows off the water, the hot sun or just the feel of sand between the toes. The beach is a special place. But the real problem for most people is that the beach isn’t necessarily close to home, and getting there can be the biggest obstacle.
Well there’s a new trend in backyard living that address this problem, and solves it rather nicely. It’s making your own backyard beach and it’s a lot easier to do than you might guess.
Start by building, what is in essence a large sandbox. You can make it as big or as small as you want, just take into consideration how many people you may want to invite to your beach. Fill the box with sand, which can be purchased at a local hardware store or from a top soil dealer, until the sand reaches the top of your box.
For the water, you’re going to want to use a product like a baby pool or some shallow container large enough to fit a few people at a time. If your sandbox is large enough you can recess the pool right into the box so the sand and water level are even. If your box is too small, consider recessing the pool into the ground just outside the box to get as seamless of a transition as possible.
Many people also fill the pool with about two inches of sand before they fill it with water to give the pool as real of a beach feel as possible.
Once your backyard beach is setup and working, keeping maintained and looking great will be your next concern. To keep it at optimum, just cover the area with a canvas or plastic cover between uses should keep it looking great. Of course you will want to change the water in the pool often, unless you get a pool filter to keep the water from turning green.
Making a backyard beach is easy and fun, and if you have kids, they will just love helping putting the beach together as well as spending the hot summer days being lazy in their very own private backyard beach.
