June Vegetable Garden Maintenance

By now your vegetable garden should be planted and well on it’s way to providing you with homegrown produce. If you got an early start, you’re probably already harvesting some of the results of your hard work. Crops like strawberries, spinach and leaf lettuces are hitting their peak and are ripe for the picking.

But starting the harvest is only part of what you need to get done in the vegetable garden in June. If you think all you have to do is sit back with a book and wait for fall harvest, consider the following list of suggestions, there’s more to do in the garden right now than you might guess.

Weeding: of course weeding needs to be done regularly to keep your garden beds weed free, but because you just finished planting, weeding may be an easy task to overlook. It’s a good idea to go over your garden every few days and to pull any weeds that may be creeping in. In essence; it’s far easier to pull a few weeds every few days than it is to spend a full day pulling a lot of weeds.

Additional planting: There is still time to get a second round of plants in the ground. If you want a staggered harvest, consider planting a few more tomatoes and other favorites that mature in 90 days or less. Just be sure what you plant can handle the heat of mid summer.

Erect supports:
tomatoes, cucumbers, peas and many other products require some kind of support to keep the plants from breaking under their own weight. If you haven’t already, you need to erect supports for any plant that requires trellising or stake supports.

Water: even though June tends to be a rainy month, you need to monitor how much water your garden is getting and supplement at times when the rain isn’t enough. On average a vegetable garden needs about an inch of water every week. But a sure way to know is if the leafs on your plants wilt in the afternoon. That’s a sure sign that your garden isn’t getting enough water and that additional watering is necessary.

Although there may not be a lot to do in the garden in June there is still things that must be done. A little time every few days should be all that’s needed to make sure you have a bountiful fall harvest.
