Dress For Success |
| |
Council Thrift will host its inaugural event for job seekers, Dress For Success, Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at the organization’s Berkley Council Thrift Shop (3297 W. 12 Mile Road) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event is open to the public.
Representatives from Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) will be on hand to provide tips on resume writing, networking and job search skills. JVS is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization, offering career and employment services for more than 60 years.
Walt Tarrow, JVS employment specialist, will discuss the value of image in a successful job search, including attire and appearance and how a job seeker’s image influences their company selection. Tarrow will present from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and then be available for “successful job search” questions from 11 a.m. until noon. He will repeat his presentation from 1-2 p.m. and be available for questions until 3 p.m.
Additionally, representatives from the David B. Hermelin ORT Resource Center will offer information on computer skills for job training, exploring the technology skills that are essential in today’s workplace and other employment services and resources. ORT partners with JVS for counseling and job placement services.
“It is no secret that it is challenging to find a job right now,” said Susan Gertner, executive director of the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section. “We wanted to do our part to help metro Detroiters not only present themselves to a potential employer in their best light, but have that little extra bit of confidence that comes with dressing well and feeling you possess the necessary skills to land the new position—all while on a budget.”
Dress for Success is designed for anyone preparing to go on an interview, starting a new job or who is in need of an update to their work wardrobe. At the Council Thrift Shops, all items are marked at a discount, giving attendees the opportunity to browse store racks for new suits, shoes, briefcases and other work-related apparel and accessories. Funds from Council Thrift Shops support non-profit projects across metro Detroit and make programs like Dress for Success possible.
There is no charge to attend and reservations are not required. For more information, please call the Berkley Council Thrift Shop at (248) 548-6664.
Sales from the Council Thrift Shops support more than 25 projects of NCJW/GDS, including Dress for Success, Wrapped in Love, Project Friendship, Kosher Meals on Wheels, All Kids Playground, Share Your Soles, Safe Place, Strategies to Prevent Domestic Abuse, Adventures in Reading, and Bookstock.
