MACPA Working To Protect Michigan Citizens During Tax Season |
| |
In time for tax season, the Michigan Association of Certified
Public Accountants (MACPA), in partnership with the Accounting Aid Society
(AAS) and Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, are
distributing a brochure entitled "Top 10 Questions to Ask a Tax Preparer:
Tips, Hints & Warning Signs."
The impetus for the creation of the brochure is due to the increase in
fraudulent and improper tax return preparation affecting those who are
largely underserved, including the elderly and immigrant populations, in the
past several years. The brochure is designed as a guide to assist all
taxpayers in finding the right professionals to help them with tax
preparation.
"We cannot overlook those most at risk of not receiving the proper
counseling on personal tax issues," said Peggy Dzierzawski, CEO of the
MACPA. "The greatest tool a person can have is knowledge. Everyone involved
with this important endeavor is committed to educating taxpayers and
assisting those most in need."
The brochure will be distributed in both English and Spanish. Included in
the literature is a glossary of important words and definitions and legal
information to know; whom to contact if there is suspicion of fraudulent,
improper or criminal tax preparation; questions to ask a tax preparer and
tips; and hints and warning signs to be aware of when searching for a tax
preparer.
There are plans to target many Michigan communities including: Dearborn,
Detroit, Hazel Park, Highland, Inkster, Oak Park, Pontiac, Redford,
Roseville, Royal Oak Township, Warren, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Flint,
Kalamazoo, Lansing, Traverse City and the Upper Peninsula.
For more information on the brochure and about speaking to a CPA
representative about the brochure, please contact the Corinne Duluk at the
MACPA at (248) 267-3717.
The Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants is a diversified,
professional, member-driven organization serving nearly 17,000 CPAs and
