DVD Review: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs  |

As much as I might hate to admit it, sometimes one has to love the “dog days” of winter. The holidays have been mercifully over for a few weeks and the dullness permeating life might only be lifted in anticipation of Groundhog Day.
Seriously, while it still gets insanely dark just after 5 PM in the Northern Hemisphere, perhaps there is no better time than to catch up on all the movies that one didn’t wish to pay $ 9.00 for in the theatres. On a recent snow-filled day, interestingly enough, the family finally decided to trot out yet another animated effort, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
I vaguely remember this “Classic Children’s Book” as I’m told by the previews, and right there I feel a sense of trepidation. Oh no, like the “Grinch” and “Where the Wild Things Are”, this might be another self-aggrandizing bloated animated film that takes a small idea, stuffs as much animated technology in it as possible, and bastardized the “message.”
Thankfully, that’s not the case with “Meatballs.” Even though the original twenty-some pages are extended to an hour and a half, the story is compelling and the visuals are still amazing. In fact, the visuals are so amazing that I wish I paid $ 9.00 to see the movie in 3 D at the theatres.
Kids will love the tale of the hapless inventor Flink Lockwood and the message that comes along with it. This is a kid’s tale for everyone.
“Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs” earns a full plate and scores a hearty 4 ½ out of 5 meatballs.
