Mariah Carey - Merry Christmas |
| |
What has become one of the most popular Christmas records in past years is Merry Christmas by Mariah Carey. I tend to think that this record is somewhat overrated but you have to hand it to her, she is a talented singer. It just gets a little tiring after a while.
Like I said, she is a good singer, but beyond that she isn’t much else, like a songwriter. Talent in the songwriting department was never something that Carey grasped much onto, so its my suggestion that she stick to remaking old classics, and not venture forth with new ones. Just spare us, please.
Back to the matter at hand. Carey does delight with her voice through the more upbeat, perennial tracks like Santa Claus is Coming to Town and All I Want for Christmas Is You. Her voice is also deep and endearing on the tracks O Holy Night and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, which I think are the ones that sell the record to me more so. Her voice is next to perfect as she belts out the words to these holiday favorites and this is where Carey is at her undoubted best on Merry Christmas. She sounds like she should be the lead in a choir or something.
Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas is a recent Holiday classic, and as a singer she sells the work herself. It has its strong points, and it has its weak points, but that is to be expected with pretty much every record, so you can blame her for that.
Grade: B Listen to: All I Want for Christmas is You |
