You’re Either In or You’re Out!

Project Runway Season 5 Episode 1 ReviewIf you’re a fan of the show than the season premier of Project Runway was everything you were waiting for. So what is all the buzz about episode 1? Everyone is saying the same thing. No one can believe that a group of such talented designers did such a poor job on their first challenge.

It was a big enough surprise to see that they opened season 5 with the grocery story challenge (the same challenge as season 1 episode 1) in which the designers must make a garment from stuff they buy at the grocery store. But it was an even bigger surprise to see such a talented group of people make such a half hearted attempt at producing a winning garment. Tim Gunn said it best when he warned that the judges were going to think the designers were being a “bunch of slackers.”

As far as who’s in and who’s out? Way too early for me to tell yet. Because of the oddness of the first challenge and having to use such unconventional materials, it’s difficult to get a good look at who’s really got the talent and who’s soon to be off’d. But one thing is for sure; the show itself hasn’t missed a beat and looks as though season 5 will be just as strong and as entertaining as any season yet.

As far as opening night surprises, not many for the season opener. It was great to see Austin Scarlet, one of the most popular contestants from season one. But outside of that a fairly normal, uneventful opening to season five, which is just the way the fans wanted it. I think there is a real fear that as the show becomes more and more popular, more and more Hollywood stars are going to want to be involved, which in my opinion, somehow lessens the real power and impact of the show.

Project Runway is such a different show because it really is all about design and the creative process, and the season opening didn’t loose sight of that or water it down with cameo appearances or obligatory celebrity guests. The show instead held true to what the fans love most, talented designers forced to be creative on demand.
