The Future of the Oceans: in Our Children’s Hands

The Devil FishThe Earth is a big place, home to over 6 billion people, yet only 30 percent of the Earth is land; the other 70 percent of the Earth is water. And that water, it now seems clear, is crucial to the survival of the people of the Earth. In fact, the oceans are a key part of the Earth’s system which makes our lives and life in general possible.

Fish harvested from the oceans provide more than eighty tons of food each year, and the ocean’s currents and water temperature control the Earth’s weather patterns. So as species of fish disappear from the oceans, and as the ocean temperature rises we see the result in the form of food shortages and increased hurricane and typhoon activity.

“We are destroying the ocean,” says Tom Campbell, world-renowned marine life photographer/cinematographer, and former US Marine. He states that he believes that too much damage has already been done to restore the ocean to restore the natural balance, but he does hope that action can be taken to stop the damage from progressing anymore.

That’s where “The Devil Fish,” comes in. Campbell believes that educating the next generation is our only chance to change the current mindset about the ocean and the life giving system that the ocean is so intricately part of.

“The Devil Fish,” is a part of a children’s book series, produced by the non-profit Save Our Seas Foundation, which is aimed at changing the attitudes of the next generation about the oceans. The hope is that this series of books will be to the next generation what the Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys book series was to the Baby Boomers and Generation Xers.

The books follow the adventures of a twin brother and sister team as they travel to various places around the globe to rescue marine animals and the habitats they call their home.

“The Devil Fish” the first of this series is very entertaining and very well done. The book is well written and many of Campbell’s photos have been integrated into the illustrations. Consider picking up “The Devil Fish” your kids will love it and you feel good about the message and purpose of the book, and that you’re doing something to change the current mindset about our oceans.
