Speaker Says No to Offshore Drilling

Speaker Says No to Offshore DrillingSpeaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has given a firm no when it comes to offshore drilling even as the tide of voices pushing the measure rises. Nancy Pelosi hasn’t done much worth mentioning since taking control of the House, but I for one am happy to see her finally take a stand against this most current attempt to fleece the American people.

What makes her opposition to off shore drilling so courageous is the fact that she stands opposed to a majority of the American people who after being bombarded by pro-big oil propaganda, now are favoring drilling for oil off the coast.

The important fact that most people are missing is that the oil companies are sitting on over 10,000 permits to drill, that they are not acting upon. Their attempt to seek additional permits to drill off shore and in ANWR isn’t an attempt to put more oil in the pipeline, in fact it’s just the opposite. By seeking permits to drill offshore, big oil is in fact attempting to stake claim to those last few acres not yet controlled by the oil companies. They have no intention to drill on those sites. Their only concern is to make sure no one drills on those sites.

If the oil companies wanted to put more oil into production they could drill on the millions of acres for which they have already received permits. But they’re not talking about that land, all they want to talk about is the land they don’t own yet.

Believe me, I’m less of a Pelosi fan everyday, and because of her inaction on many issues, it’s a good bet that she’ll feel the heat come reelection time, but on this issue she is right to resist and to stick to her guns. If she had been this firm on issues like warrantless wiretaps, torture and the war in Iraq, we may not be in the trouble we are today.

Thank you Nancy for finding your backbone. Now if you could just keep it for a while, perhaps we can start to undo all the wrong that’s been done over the last seven years.
