McCain finally right on Iraq

McCain finally right on IraqCall it what you want; a flip flop, a reassessment, a revamping, it doesn’t matter what it’s called, the important thing is that John McCain is finally starting to come around to meet the view of the American people on Iraq.

It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago John McCain was quoted as saying we might be in Iraq for 100 years. It’s amazing what a tightly run race will do to the decision making process. But regardless of how he came to the conclusion, it’s about time John McCain started talking about bringing our troops home.

Publicly McCain is pointing to the success of the troop surge and the changing condition on the ground in Iraq as the reason we can begin talking about withdrawing troops, but the truth is much more likely a political decision. Someway, somehow, McCain is starting to get in tune with the American Public on the issue of Iraq.

Although he’s scared to death of “losing” the Iraq war, whatever that means, he is finally being to dialog with the American people rather than just tell us what he wants to do.

A little too late? The problem with McCain taking this view now is that it may be a little too late. He needed to take this position months ago, before evidence of the surge success was in. That would have confirmed his view making him look like a leader rather than a follower.

So what can he do to win the issue? If he really wants to own this issue he needs to keep looking forward rather than backwards. It’s not worth arguing over the success of the surge, deal with what needs to happen next. The war in Iraq was mishandled, no argument here, so deal with what we need to do next.

When America votes in November, tell be looking for the person who can take America in the right direction again, not who wants to rehash the recent past. If John McCain is going to win in November he needs to acknowledge the needs and wants of the American people, and he needs to act like a leader. You’re almost there John, now take the next step.
