Fire the Cannons and Light the Fuse: A Conversation with Jet Lag Gemini

The darlings of Doghouse Records lineup, Jet Lag Gemini are bringing nothing but good times to the masses. They are currently out on the road with one of the more underrated bands in existence right now, Zebrahead, and there isn’t a nook or cranny of these United States they aren’t hitting.

Fire the Cannons is out now. This record is chock full of sugary-sweet goodness with extra dollop of rock frosting right on top. Think something of a Plain White T’s/Midtown hybrid, complete with catchy, anthemic hooks, persistent guitars and strong vocals throughout. You’ll be singing in no time – don’t fight it.

I had the chance to catch up with the Jersey boys from Jet Lag Gemini and had the chance to ask them how they came up with their unique band name, how they think their record came out in the end and just where we can see the boys the rest of the year.

Get eXposed: Is there a story behind your band name?
Jet Lag Gemini: We wanted our bands name to represent our music. We didn't really look or sound like a lot of bands around us, so we came up with a name that was different yet rock & roll at the same time.

GE: Tell me about the recording process of Fire the Cannons.
JLG: We had to finish the entire album in a very short amount of time, so there was a lot of pressure to get things moving. We think that actually helped make the album better because we dropped everything we were doing and started writing like crazy, locking ourselves away in a basement. We recorded "Fire the Cannons" with Jon Kaplan at three different studios, one of them being Mission Sound in Brooklyn, NY. Everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Taking Back Sunday and All American Rejects recorded there. We even ended up sleeping in the studio overnight to get the most time out of it.

GE: Was it important to find the right producer?
JLG: Definitely, luckily Jon was excited about working with us and was on the same page as us about how the record should sound. He was also really motivating in the studio, allowing us to stay focused on rocking out.

GE: Did your songwriting approach change with this record?
JLG: We always write our songs by bringing ideas together and working on them as a band. For this record, we tried to demo all the songs at home as well before taking them into the studio. This way we could tell right away what worked and what didn’t without wasting time in the studio. Having all the songs written before we started working with Jon definitely helped a lot.

GE: How do you think Fire the Cannons turned out in the end?
JLG: We love everything about it. It’s like a baby to us, although it’s in the shape of a plastic square (and doesn’t emit odors!)

GE: Do you have a favorite song off of it?
JLG: Our personal favorites are Picture Frames and Stepping Stone. However we like playing Just Say How live the most because it has a lot of energy.

GE: Tell me about your current tour.
JLG: Right now we are on tour with Farewell, Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer, The Morning Of, and Kenotia. It’s been a total blast so far. All the bands put on an awesome live show and are awesome people in general, although we feel like there might be some serious pranks that might go down.

GE: Did you get a chance to pick who you took out on tour?
JLG: Farewell and Zolof wanted to hit the road with us for some time so this was the perfect opportunity to do a tour together. Most of the decisions weren’t up to us though.

GE: What can we expect from Jet Lag Gemini the rest of the year?
JLG: A lot of touring! We’ll be on the road supporting our record. We will probably release another video in the near future. We're not sure what song it will be for, but maybe we'll leave that decision up to you guys via online voting. Our goal is to grow as a band so that we can afford to have the best live show possible. We want to be able to play our songs and blow stuff up on stage at the same time…it’s the American way!

To check these guys out, head over to www.myspace.com/jetlaggemini. Fire the Cannons is out in stores everywhere! (FYE, Hot Topic, Best Buy, Smartpunk etc), as well as iTunes and their video for "Run This City" can be seen online or on MTVu!
