Fall Home Maintenance: The Quick List By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
Although summer is still in full swing, it won’t be long before the cold weather starts to arrive and worse, the white stuff starts to fall. As we move into the fall, there are a lot of things you need to take care of around your home to be ready for the winter months and to prevent the chance of any costly damage from winter’s fury.
• Gutters: Fall is the time to clean your gutters and downspouts of all debris. Clean out all leaves and dirt that may have collected to ensure water is flowing properly down the spouts and away from the house. Be sure not to let water collect near the house. Collecting water can cause foundation damage so be sure all downspouts point away from the house.
• Windows & Doors: Now is a good time to start putting all storm windows back in and storing away screens for the winter. While you’re changing out the screens, it’s a good time to inspect the windows and doors for cracks and damage that may cause drafts this winter. Be sure to caulk up any cracks you find.
• Lawn Care: The fall is the time to fertilize and seed your lawn. Although the lawn doesn’t look like it’s growing, the truth is the grass’s root system is growing and the fall with the cooler ground temperatures, is the perfect time to seed and patch up all your lawns brown and bare spots.
• The Furnace: It’s easy to forget that the furnace needs regular maintenance and care to ensure that it’s working to maximum potential. Before you turn on the furnace again for the year, take some time and clean out any dirt and material that has collected in the furnace and in the heat ducts. Also be sure to change your furnace’s filter. If it’s been a while since your furnace has been serviced, consider calling a professional to have your heating system looked over.
• A General Look Around: Take some time and closely look around the outside of your house for areas where animals might have built nests or started burrowing into the house. Block up any holes in the house you may find.
Winter can be a very difficult time of the year, but by taking the time this fall, you can prevent many of the winter time problems which can lead to costly repairs.
