The Lions Den

The Lions Notch Another W

The Lions took home their second straight win with a 27-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The offense was firing on all cylinders and the often anemic Lions defense was able to shut down one of the stronger, high-powered offenses in the entire NFL.

Loudmouth Jon Kitna didn’t do much, but he made the most of it, going 3-3 for 76 yards and touchdown. Behind him, the heir apparent Drew Stanton only tossed two passes but completed them both for 58 yards and a touchdown. Dan Orlovsky got the bulk of the work, completing 11-22 for 137 yards. Adding to their already strong air game, the QB’s took it to the turf, as both Stanton (2 rushes, 20 yards) and Orlovsky (rush, 10 yards) scrambled for touchdowns.

Sadly, outside of the rushing attempts of the quarterbacks, no one else really did much of anything. Highly touted rookie Kevin Smith four times for 19 yards and Brian Calhoun carried seven times for 12 yards. Tatum Bell looked bad, carrying the ball five times for only nine yards.

Calvin Johnson again dominated. He caught three passes for 76 yards, a touchdown and ran seamless routes his entire time on the field. The Lions are stocked well at the wide out position and this game showed just that.
On the other side of the ball, it is all about new faces for this Lions team. Rookie defensive end Andre Fluellen forced a big fumble and Brian Kelly intercepted a pass on their way to a win. The defense looked sharp as they held the very talented Carson Palmer to 6-15 for 50 yards and really didn’t allow the Bengals to get into a groove all game. Another new face in the secondary, Leigh Bodden, looked liked he belonged with big hits and fluid plays throughout.

For the second straight game the Lions rushed more times than they took to their air, and for the second straight week they went home to Detroit with a win. The new plan and new offensive coordinator both look like a good idea right now.
