Buying Reusable Lunch Supplies

The first day of school is just around the corner and parents are in the middle of buying everything on their child’s school supply list. Amidst the pile of pens, pencils, folders, paper and tissue boxes, you’ve probably bought your child a new lunch box.

Packing daily lunches is a common chore amongst parents of school age children and it’s a healthy one for those who want to ensure their children are eating foods that are good for them instead of buying fries and burgers each day in the school cafeteria.

As you look at what you’ll be packing in those new lunch boxes, have you considered buying containers for them that can be reused instead of continually buying juice boxes, sandwich bags and water bottles?

Buying reusable containers means making an up front investment, but over the long run it will save you money from what you would have been spending to re-supply your cabinets with throwaway lunch packing supplies. If you’re worried about your children losing the containers, consider it a lesson for them in being responsible for their possessions and encourage them to take proper care of and keep track of them.

Start with a container for sandwiches. This has the added benefit of protecting a sandwich from getting squished. Next have at least three small to medium containers for fruits, vegetables and snacks. Just like with sandwiches, they’ll prevent food from being flattened. A smaller container is a good addition to use for dips or salad dressings. Last of all, a beverage container is needed for drinks. If your child wants milk in their lunch, that is best bought in the cafeteria so milk doesn’t spoil sitting in the lunch box unless you use an ice pack to keep the milk cool until lunchtime.

You’ll want all of your containers to have tight seals to prevent leaking and preserve freshness.

A company with a known tradition for supplying the best in storage containers is Tupperware. Buying your containers from Tupperware is one of many possibilities but they’re a good place to start and get ideas and what types of containers to look for.

For example, check out their new Lunch Sets. They offer two sets: one is the Sandwich Lunch Set and the second is the Salad Lunch Set. Both sets come with a lunch bag, beverage holder, mini salt and pepper shakers, and four additional containers of different sizes all designed to hold a large item and three for smaller items.

Another idea is to get an all-in-one container like Tupperware’s Lunch ‘n Things Container. It is one container that is split into 5 sections. The largest section is ideal for a sandwich and the other sections will hold fruits, vegetables and snacks.

Parents, don’t forget looking for containers for your own use for your lunches at work. If you frequently heat up food for your lunch, buy a container that’s intended to be used in the microwave. These containers are more durable and long-lasting while regular plastic containers will be damaged in the microwave and eventually will need to be thrown out.
