Project Runway Season 5 Episode 7 By: Amy Vedder |
| |
Just when you think the competition couldn’t get any harder, it does. This week episode called “Fashion That Drives You” had the designers creating a garment from recyclable parts from Saturn Vue Hybrids automobiles.
This challenge was the second chance for the designers to use unconventional materials when designing a garment, because as Tim said, the first innovation challenge at Gristedes, left the judges very disappointed.
The winner this week was Leanne, and it was a justly deserved win. Her look was incredible. Using the leather from the seat covers and the seatbelts, Leanne created a look that could have been part of any fashion show anywhere in the world. It was awesome.
The loser, with little surprise was Keith. His look was awful. Keith, for whatever reason, mistook the judge’s suggestions that he edit his looks more, to mean he should create something boring, and plain. And that’s exactly what he created. And then when on the runway, he blamed everybody including the judges and the model for his design’s failure. At this point in the competition it’s sad to see anybody go home, but Keith’s look really was awful, which made it easy for the judges.
Other designers that did a good job included Jerell who used the reverse side of the seat cushion and parts of the dashboard to create a sleek and sexy look that really was cool. Korto also created a stunning and beautiful garment by weaving together seatbelts to create a jacket. The look was hip and cool, and even guest judge Rachel Zoe said she would walk out of there in the coat.
The surprise of the night was the appearance of Laura Bennet filling in for Nina Garcia. Laura’s judging was fair, but without the bite that Nina delivers.
One thing is for sure, the group is getting smaller and the pressure to deliver is ramping up. What does next week bring? Only time will tell, but you can count on the fact that it will be fabulous.
