Getting the Backyard Ready for Winter: A Family Affair

Getting the Backyard Ready for Winter: A Family AffairThere are very few activities that the whole family can participate in which everyone’s work and participation can have an equally important impact. Getting the backyard ready for winter is one of those activities, and this year is the perfect year to start getting everyone in the house involved in this annual event.

Getting the backyard ready for winter isn’t necessary hard work but it is very important, and when the whole family is involved the chores go quickly and everyone gets to celebrate in a job well done.

Consider the following breakdown of work.

• Raking and bagging or composting the leaves is the perfect job for the kids. The work is not difficult or dangerous, making it the perfect job for the young ones to help in prepping the yard for winter.

• Mowing the lawn doesn’t end when the calendar changes to September, in fact, it’s important to keep mowing the lawn until the weather prevents the lawn from growing anymore. This is the perfect job for Dad or Mom.

• Weeding in the garden. Most people wait until spring before the clean up the garden, but by getting at in fall, the job is easier and the clean up in spring becomes a breeze. This is a great opportunity for Mom or Dad to work directly with the kids pointing out what to pull, what to burry, and what to leave alone.

• Mulching. This is another activity for Mom or Dad to work with the kids on. Spreading mulch is really easy and the kids will love spreading around the mulch with Mom or Dad.

• Composting. This task is probably best left to Mom or Dad, but there’s no reason why the kids can’t carry over the material to be composted while Mom or Dad use the pitch fork to turn the material.

There is an added bonus to prepping the yard for winter with the whole family, not only is it great, quality family time, but in addition, you’ll be teaching your kids skills that they will have for their whole lives. You’ll be making memories that everyone will keep forever.
