Protect Your Tools For Winter

It is about the time of year for you to put all of your lawn and garden equipment away for the winter. During the winter, these items are not being used and are susceptible to damage and breakdowns. There are simple steps you can take to ensure that your equipment is taken care of over the winter and will be ready when spring comes.

If any of your tools require the use of gasoline, make sure that you empty it out before you store it away. When you cut your grass for the final time, you should have just enough gas in to finish your lawn. Then, let it run until all the gas in the tank is used up. Since these machines contain motors, you should have them cleaned. Also, you should drain the oil and remove the spark plugs. All you need to do is place a couple drops of oil into the engine and start it up to circulate it around and put the spark plugs back in. This will keep your mower in good shape and save you money from having it repaired in the spring.

As for things that don’t use gasoline, you should test them before you put them away to make sure they are working properly and unplug them for the winter. If they run off of a battery, take the battery out and keep it in a safe place where it won’t be exposed to the elements. Have all of your equipment, whether it runs off of electricity or battery, thoroughly cleaned before you store it away.

Keep everything in one place, so you won’t be franticly trying to find everything when it is time to use it again. Make sure things are stored in a dry environment to keep them from getting moisture over the winter. If your storage area tends to get wet, just place a few pieces of plywood down on the floor to keep it from the machines.

These are a few simple things you can do to guarantee that your lawn equipment is taken care of over the harsh winter months. This will save you and your wallet a huge headache when spring rolls around.
