Today in 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson all died when their chartered plane crashed in Mason City, Iowa, in what's been deemed "the day the music died." Waylon Jennings was playing bass with Holly's band on the tour, and was spared when he gave up his seat on the doomed plane to the Big Bopper.
Today in 1971, Lynn Anderson's single "Rose Garden" was certified Gold.

Today in 1999, Trace Adkins injured his ankle. While he was surveying some property outside Nashville, his truck got stuck in the mud. Working to get it out, he stepped into a sinkhole, fracturing and dislocating his ankle. He underwent surgery the following day.
