Randy Newman Competes With Himself At Oscars On Sunday
Randy Newman is competing with himself at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards this Sunday. Newman's "Almost There" and "Down in New Orleans" from Disney's "The Princess And The Frog" are both contenders in the Best Song category. The double nomination is the latest in a string of recognitions for the songwriter and composer since 1982. That was the year that Newman was nominated for "One More Hour" from "Ragtime." He was also nominated in the Best Original Score category that year for the same film. Newman lost to "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" from the movie "Arthur" in the song category and lost the score category to "Chariots of Fire." After his "Ragtime" losses in '82, it would be another 20 years and multiple winless nominations before Newman nabbed an Oscar. When he finally did win, it was in 2002 for "If I Didn't Have You" from the animated film "Monsters, Inc." Over the course of the 66-year-old's career, Newman has written Oscar-nominated music for "Toy Story 2," "Meet The Parents," "Pleasantville," and more. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be presented at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood on Sunday, March 7th. ABC will televise the ceremony live starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
