Phoenix Name-Checks Liszt
Phoenix has released the single "Lisztomania," which is inspired by composer Franz Liszt. Singer Thomas Mars refers to him as France's first true rock star. Listening to the song, you may not think of classical music, but the track was inspired by the feeling that Liszt evoked amongst the youth of the day. Mars says the band also loves his story. Mars says he doubts the band will receive the throngs of screaming fans the composer did via the song, but it may shake things up a little. He explains, quote, "We wouldn't mind [the reaction], but the idea was just that this thing is out of time. Growing up in Versailles, it was like growing up in a museum and the only thing we wanted to do was make the museum [come] back to life or something." "Lisztomania" is featured on the band's "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" album.
